Project Background : Story & Inspiration
Born from a need to solve a real-world problem—running out of cloud storage—SovereignNAS was built from an old
HP Compaq dc5700 SFF with a Pentium Dual-Core E5200 CPU and 4GB RAM.
Motivated by privacy, cost-efficiency, and curiosity, the project repurposed second-hand drives, used bind
mounts, Syncthing, and AI-powered PhotoPrism indexing to create a smart, secure family photo vault.
Notable tech: TrueNAS SCALE, Tailscale VPN, Syncthing, PhotoPrism, and Shinobi NVR—all integrated via creative
scripting, cron jobs, and clever workarounds.
It's not just a NAS—it's a resilient, evolving personal cloud designed with heart, ingenuity, and lots of
troubleshooting.
